Battle of the smart phones: Droid v. iPhone

I’m sure you’ve all seen the ads for Verizon/Motorolla’s new phone, Droid.

If not, enjoy (and then continue reading below):

Droid took off the gloves, imitated an iPhone commercial, and called out the top smart phone for what it doesn’t do — doesn’t have a real keyboard, can’t multitask, can’t take 5-megapixel pictures, can’t take pictures in the dark, doesn’t customize, can’t run widgets and can’t interchange batteries…

…and I love it!

We got into a little debate today at the office about why the commercial is good or bad. Of course, I drink the Apple cool-aid on the day-to-day. HOWEVER, I’ve been pulling for the underdog since I got my G1 last year. And aren’t they saying Android is going to take over in the next few years?

But IMO, the ad is brilliant! First, it makes you believe it’s an iPhone commercial and then it kicks the iPhone where it hurts. Maybe that’s a low-blow, but I think ads like this create buzz and get people talking — and that’s a good thing! Plus, when you’re going after the big dog, you gotta come out swinging!

What do you think? Love the Droid commercial or hate it? Is it too low of a blow?

  • Droid is Verizon anyway, Kervie! Lol...and I can't leave T-mobile because it's free since my mom works for them :). Everyone knows I love the iPhone and wish I could have it...However, I'm just playing devils advocate and rooting for the underdog...plus, I'm a big fan of the full keyboard! Thanks for your comments...let the office debate continue ;)
  • Good commercial, really hooked you into thinking it's an Apple bit. One thing I didn't like was the lack of imagination in making the commercial absolutely unique for the Android. You know that Apple was successful in implementing their simple and straight to the point ads, when their competitors try to mimic it just to get consumers attention. I love the iphone, wouldn't know what to do without it - keeps me connected all the time (Service carriers would be another story :) - So far ATT's been ok) So until I see a great device in my hands that actually do the things that the iPhone does and more, then I might consider switching. But as far as I'm concerned - the iPhone still rules since you don't see people lining up outside a T-mobile store to get their phones... Time to switch Nicole!
  • Thanks for the comments, Seth!

If I were you, I'd go Droid. The iPhone is awesome but Verizon is a lot better than ATT from what I've seen (although I'm a T-mobile girl myself)...and Android phones are pretty cool and Google-fied...which is always nice :) I agree with you -- the only thing I'm a little unsure of is that Moto makes the phone...but we'll see. I would hope with the claims they're making that they've done enough research/bug testing/etc. to back it up!

But yes, so far 100% of commenters on this post agree that the Droid ads rock :) -- would anyone like to challenge us???
  • I'm a BB VZ customer and I'm trying to decide whether or not to go "Droid Mode" or switch to iPhone with the big A(AT&T). Not sure if the phone will be as good since its being manufactured by Motorola, but who knows?

As far as the ad goes, I like the robot takeover method similar to the Matrix or i Robot films. And come one , everyone wants a robot sidekick that can get them out of any problem!

I see a good campaign with DROIDDOES.com, but a solution that wont beat the solid wall of success with the iPhone/Apple partnering. Keep it coming though Verizon, this competitive campaign is what drives our economy and innovation.
