How has Twitter changed our lives?

Picture your life before you began using Twitter, and compare it to now. How has it changed?

Perhaps it’s allowed you to connect more easily with your friends? Or maybe you’ve made new connections solely through Twitter? Has it taught you how to do your job better? Or even how to live your life better?

When I first started using Twitter, I think my first impression was the same as most others, “What’s the point?” But in the past 6+ months I’ve been heavily involved in Twitter, my life HAS begun to change. After attending a Social Media Club mixer this week, I realized something – I would not know 90% of these people without the use of Twitter. In fact, I would barely have any professional connections in Knoxville without Twitter. Beyond that, I have connections all over the country because of it.

I’ve also learned so much more about my career through the use of Twitter. Every day, the thought-leaders I follow post article links, blog entries, etc…and each of these teach me more about public relations and social media in general. I would even go as far as to say that I’ve learned more in 6 months through my connections to these professionals than I learned in 4 1/2 years of college.

I also find it enriching to know that I have the ability to share my own article finds and blog posts to my group of followers. At the mixer a few nights ago, someone said to me, “You introduced me to Streamy.” While it may seem trivial, I introduced something to someone through my use of Twitter. And they may not have known about it otherwise. And my personal impact isn’t even large comparatively. Look at Trent Reznor of NIN – he helped raise over $800,000 for a fan in need of a heart transplant – all through the use of Twitter.

So what if we spend a few hours a day tweeting? It’s not a waste of time if we’re furthering our careers and ultimately – our lives. So what do you think? How has Twitter changed your life?

For me it has really been about thought leadership and developing a very valuable stream of knowledge. It is a tremendous resource for learning about, staying current with, and sharing ideas regarding social media and the various PR/Marketing applications. This can also extend to personal hobbies/interests (i.e. if you enjoy cooking, follow Tyler Florence and Rick Bayless, etc.).

Ultimately, whether it is Twitter or one of the myriad of other SM tools being used, the reality is that future is all about openness and joining the conversation. That applies to brands, individuals, and everyone in between.

I ended up passing 1000 tweets back in April. During my first year using the service, I've formed many connections similar to yours.

Given that I'm a freelancer working out of my home office, Twitter has allowed me to expand my network like nothing else has. In addition, one of my favorite parts about it is that it allows me to share in some fun workday banter with my peers and collegues. As I heard someone say, "Twitter conversation is the modern equivalent to water-cooler talk."

I'm unemployed & circumstances have made me pretty much housebound. I got active on twitter in January to let them know about my Lance Armstrong blog. I ended up becoming friends with cycling fans in Australia, California then all over the world. We interact during events like the Giro, share news links & communicate on non-cycling topics.

I definitely agree with your post Nicole. I haven't made as many real-life connections yet, but I've been opened up to a wealth of knowledge (mainly links to blog posts and web sites!) that have helped me learn a great deal.

I also just started my own blog and began writing for an online magazine and Twitter has been a great place to get the word out!
I've heard rumors of Twitter becoming a paid-for service and I think that would be terrible. I love that it is free and open to anyone, it creates an awesome melting pot of thoughts and ideas!
