I’m done with #FollowFriday, and here’s why…

17 July 2009 197 views Comments

I’m sure most of you know this already, but today (like every other Friday) is known as #FollowFriday in the Twittersphere.

I used to be a big fan of figuring out which tweeps deserved endorsement every Friday, but frankly I’ve grown sick of it…and I’ve officially declared that I’m done playing the game.

In case you’re wondering (as many were today), here is my reason why:

There are only so many people I will endorse. Right now, I have a really great group of Twitter friends…and it occasionally grows as I find new/interesting tweeps. However, I was starting to find that I ended up #ff-ing the same people every other week on a rotating schedule…and honestly it just starts to become pointless for me to continue doing that.

Plus, those people that I consider to be #ff-worthy are also the people I retweet daily. I endorse these people every single day – so why do I really need to #ff them? It’s much more convincing when I show my followers an interesting RT from someone (as opposed to an impersonal “here, follow this person”).

So, there you have it – my reasoning for giving up on the #followfriday tradition. Want to know who I think you should follow? Just check out who I’m retweeting right now.

  • Thanks for the comments, guys!

Trey - like the #followanytime concept. I might have to check it out sometime :)
  • The current model for #followfriday does seem like a ton of noise and little "signal."

You're exactly right about your "endorse via RT" concept. At the end of the day, we do look to our "trusted sources" to help us make sense out of the noise. You have "fans" paying attention to you right now, and it matters to them 1) who you're recommending and 2) is it them ("is it me?" they ask).

Something that might be a little more valuable is a random, one-person shout-out with a reason-to-follow description. That's something I'm attempting through #followanytime.

If you'll do a Twitter search for #followanytime, I think you'll find some really cool people you'd enjoy connecting with.

    Have fun.

Hey Nicole, thanks for the post. Makes sense, but I still think it's kind of a charming way to give a nod to somebody who did something nice for you that week or deserves special recognition. I guess you don't have to do it EVERY week. That does get old.

    So, here's one for you : )

#FF @PRNicoleV For being a great tweeter and leader of Knox SMC!

See you at launch next week! -Mark

Hear hear, i coudlnt' agree with you more... been grappling with this for a while, tried a new system (just FF those that are in my replies, DM and favorites folders, to show true conversation) but that also got old pretty fast... in other words, you rock, well said.
