Twitter: Making and breaking movies since 2009

twittermoviesHave you seen District 9 yet? I haven’t…but I’m planning on it because of all the rave reviews I’ve seen on Twitter. The funny thing is, I actually DIDN’T want to see the movie when previews started. It just looked a little too weird for my liking.

However, seeing all my trusted tweeps tweeting about how GREAT it is actually made me want to see it…so now I’m going to. Oh, the power of Twitter.

But this leads me to a bigger story – Twitter’s effect on movies in general…

Remember what Twitter did to Bruno? Opening night was a fairly normal $14+ million. However, with a Friday night/Saturday morning barrage of terrible Twitter reviews, the movie fell to plummeted to $8.8 million in its second day. Bruno saw almost a 40% drop in ticket sales from Friday to Saturday…all because of the Twitter effect.

District 9, on the other hand, remained popular through opening weekend…and continues to do well. Plus, you have people like me who are only planning to see it due to it’s great reviews.

The instantaneous nature of Twitter allows it to effect movies like this. In Bruno’s case, tweeps were offended, scared, or somehow put-off by the movie, so they told their followers. When it came to District 9, Twitter was full of positive feedback and recommendations to see the movie.

It’s just further proof for the non-believers that we really do have something here with Twitter…and companies who are slow to catch on better start listening up…because Twitter’s effecting our lives (and our businesses) whether we like it or not! And it doesn’t just apply to the box office…

Now I wonder which movie Twitter will make or break next…I guess we’ll see…

  • ...on the same note -- I think Twitter also help sustain Harry Potter 6 in the cinema and opening weekend in IMAX 3 weeks LATER. But it also helped to take down Transformers 2 (which I liked), just not as bad a Bruno.

    I don't think we should ever underestimate the power of social media!
