Fact checking is definitely a MUST for anyone using Twitter as a source for news, but *especially* for media outlets such as CNN.

Although Twitter provides valued, real-time updates on what is happening around the world, having the correct information is always more important than beating the competition to the punch.

I was listening to an SM webinar recently in which the speaker said "I don't even watch the news anymore. I don't have to. I just log on to Twitter."

I think this is probably true for a lot of twitter users. But, although Twitter provides a plethora of quick information, is it always the most reliable information? Probably not. That's why we should still be able to rely on our reputable news sources like CNN to give us the CORRECT information on any stories floating around the Twitterverse. If these outlets stop checking facts and relying on tweets, it would take the trusted "filter" aspect out of traditional news sources, IMO.

Everyone is afraid to miss a breaking story, so I think moving forward you will hear more 'several sources are reporting on twitter that...' but you are exactly right, any news outlet needs to accurately reference the source and there needs to be confirmation.

I heard about Farrah's death on Twitter and immediately check news sources to confirm. I will miss her by the way.
