What do you want to do before you die?

If you found out today that you had only one day to live, what would you do?

The_buried_lifeI’ve recently become obsessed with MTV’s new show, The Buried Life, which has inspired me to write this post. (In case you haven’t seen it, tune in next Monday.)

The basic premise of the show is inspiring to say the least. Four guys make a list of 100 things they want to do before they die and set out to accomplish them. For everything they mark off their list, they help a stranger do the same. (When they started the project three years ago, they actually weren’t affiliated with MTV.)

So what do you want to do before you die?

I think many of us fall into a routine when it comes to life. Between school, work, and other commitments, it’s often easy to let your dreams fall to the wayside. We race through life, focusing on money and success, sometimes forgetting to actually live.

And what does that get you? Does money make you truly happy? Or is it the experiences that define your life? Isn’t it time we stop worrying so much about material things and place a little more emphasis on life experience?

No, I’m not suggesting everyone quits their jobs, buys a big bus and travels the country crossing items off their list. However, it doesn’t hurt to keep your dreams in mind while you’re living the day-to-day. Do you even have a list? Have you thought about the things you need to do before you die? Are they written down? Do you know how to accomplish them?

For the past year or so, I’ve been working on living my life a little more freely. While I’m still focused on accomplishing my career goals, I always save time for true life experiences. And I’m not saying your career goals can’t factor into your life experiences…I’m just saying that it’s important to break the routine a little bit sometimes to ensure you’re getting the most out of this short life.

I think it’s important to make sure that we all live the life we set out to lead and accomplish the goals we set for ourselves. When I’m laying on my death bed in my old age, I hope that I can look back on life with no regrets. Do you wish to do the same?

I decided to jot down the first few things that came to mind when I thought of my “bucket list”. I’ve had these things in mind for quite some time. However, I’ve never actually written them down. (In my experience with goals, it’s always best to write them down somewhere.)

So here are a few things I want to do before I die:

  1. Go skydiving.
  2. Travel across the country in an RV.
  3. Start a pit bull rescue.
  4. Go to Shambhala Music Festival.
  5. Zipline in Costa Rica.
  6. Enjoy my wedding day.
  7. Travel through Europe.
  8. Make someone’s day.
  9. Raise two children.
  10. Start my own business.

I know I have more to write down. However, this is a start. Why don’t you take a moment to write down some of the things you want most in life?

What are some things you want to do before you die?

  • Here's my list for the moment. You never really take the time to think about these kinds of things since we're all busy with the everyday things. But I sure would like to be able to do these sometime.

    1. Skydive
    2. Visit every significant historic art venue worldwide
    3. Ride in a fighter jet
    4. Win a prestigious design award or honor
    5. Have my entire family move to Knoxville
    6. Go to a College National Championship Game in either basketball or football and of course have WVU win it :)
    7. Drive a Lamborghini for a day... or a week, well maybe even own one.
    8. Have a cameo in some low budget movie and make it turn out to be a blockbuster so I can get some royalties.
    9. Have a food item named after me.
    10. Get a Gatorade shower for winning something.
    11. Tour the country with a band as the drummer
    12. Work at Industrial Light and Magic
    13. Do the voice a cartoon character
    14. Retire and buy an RV to travel cross-country with the wife and kids.
    15. Ring the bell at the NYSE
    16. Get a photography book published
    17. Get an Olympic medal in something - Curling is my best chance at getting one.
    18. Get my parents their dream house, my mom her dream vacation and my dad his dream car.
    19. Have season tickets to see my favorite NBA team - right now maybe the Cleveland Cavs
    20. Get to see my kids and grandkids and hey maybe great grandkids grow up to be successful.
  • Kervie,

You have an ambitious bucket list! Good luck! Maybe you/us/Pyxl will win an ADDY this year and we can shower you in Gatorade. I'm going to bring some into the office just in case ;)
  • Ride my bike bike across the USA with my kids
  • Very cool! Any idea when you'll get to do it?
  • My son graduates High School in two years. We plan to ride the TransAmerica before he sets off on his own. I blog about the adventures @ http://www.theadventuremonkey.com/blog
  • Thought inspiring post. I actually have a very long "bucket list". But the top ones:
-Live & teach art in Scotland (even for just a couple of years).
-Be fearless and more dedicated to MY art.
    -Travel more
-Be less materialistic (I'm too sentimentally attached to things).
-Finally finish and publish the children's books I have on my drawing board.

The best things I have already accomplished:
    -raised three wonderful sons
-teach high school (graphic design/illustration) which is immensely soul satisfying.
  • Sandi,

Great list! Very inspiring things you have on there. Do you have a timeframe for moving to Scotland? That sounds very exciting!
  • Great post Nicole. This question is a question everyone should ask themselves. It truly helps you find out who you are and urges you to live life in the now.
  • Thanks, Tony!

What are some of the items on your list?
  • I like to keep it simple.

-Start a positive movement (can be a company, organization, etc.)
    -Travel
    -Inspire others
  • Love it! Thanks for sharing!
  • I totally agree, Nicole!

Life is more than about success and money, it's about experiences and living in the moment. I too wrote a similar post to this on how your value and self worth shouldn't be based on your financial success but on your life experiences and relationships. (http://bit.ly/Money-Aint-A-Thang)

    Bucket List:
    - Sky diving
    - Traveling to Australia, Greece, Italy, and others
    - Start my own company (a desert/ice cream/candy 24/7 delivery service...haha!)
  • Ooo Australia! I forgot to put that one on my list...but I'd love to go there someday too.

Thanks for the comment, Nicole. I just commented on your post as well. Like I said over there, while money is important and necessary in order to live, it's just too important to make sure you still LIVE LIFE (instead of spending 100% of your time on your work)! Me? I'm happier with enough money to get by yet still enough time to do the things I want to do. You can't take the money with you when you die, so what's the point of having more than you know what to do with?

If I had one day left to live, I would want to spend every minute with my daughter, friends, and family!
  • Very nice! Being that you have a whole life to live (not just one day), I'd love to hear some more of the items on your bucket list :)
  • Nicole, this is a great post. For me, the things on my Bucket List include:

    - Play Golf at Pebble Beach, St. Andrews and Augusta National
    - Get a Hole in One
    - Writing a best selling book
    - Go Skydiving and Travel across the US on the road (I'm with you on these!)
    - Bowl a 300
    - Coordinate the largest organized line dance (perhaps the Electric Slide) LOL

Overall, I want to live a more "fearless" life. I don't want FEAR to hold me back from doing the things I dream of doing.

As always, I wish you all the best!
  • Ed, those are awesome!!! Thanks for sharing :)

I completely understand the "fearless" thing. When I watch The Buried Life, I always think to myself, "damn, those guys have balls!" because I don't know that I would be able to do some of the things they do. But like you said, it's important not to let fear hold you back from doing the things you dream of. I think we all just have to keep it in our minds that we should be more afraid NOT to accomplish the things on our list. I'm afraid to pass on before I reach my goals, so I just have to let that fear outweigh the fear that could potentially hold me back in each individual goal. Does that make sense?

PS: Let me know when this record-breaking Electric Slide takes place. I need to see this!
  • Agreed :-) For me: FEAR = INACTION ... and because of that, I will not let fear stop me from doing the things I need to do. Doing nothing is not the answer, doing something is. As Jedi Master Yoda said, "Do or Do Not, there is no TRY." Wise words :-)

You'll be on the blast Tweet once I can pull it all together. :-)
